Tactical Timing

As Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” reminds us, success belongs to those who strive, dare greatly, and persevere. At ESCO Automation, we embody this spirit, blending cutting-edge technology with the power of exceptional people—from new hires to seasoned veterans. Our greatest asset is our team, whose dedication drives transformative outcomes.

Overcoming Complex Challenges

Large-scale technology upgrades present unique challenges not seen in smaller projects. New technology, while powerful, can introduce risks when customers push to leverage its full capabilities before completing core upgrades. Keeping the focus on hardware improvements tested our team’s resolve. Countless meetings focused on weighing risks and rewards while customers sought simultaneous process enhancements. Our ability to manage these dynamics while maintaining operational stability was critical.

Delivering Measurable Value

After a multi-year effort to complete seven automation upgrades, our team harnessed new technology to deliver significant process improvements. We added substantial value across the original project, new enhancements, and upcoming 2025 initiatives by:

  1. Boost Efficiency: Improved average runtime by 30–50%.
  2. Expand Capacity: Increased plant production capabilities.
  3. Enable Data-Driven Decisions: Provided optimization tools for smarter operations.

These advancements extend beyond reducing downtime and mitigating process disruptions, creating a foundation for sustained value and operational excellence.

Fueling Customer Growth

With growing market share and rising sales, the customer is expanding production by adding process equipment and positioning the plant as their flagship facility. Our technology upgrades have streamlined capacity expansion, empowering the customer to seize new opportunities.

Key Lessons for Technology Transformations

Navigating complex technology upgrades requires more than technical expertise—it demands teamwork, strategic alignment, and resilience. Reflecting on a recent large-scale project, our team distilled six key takeaways that drove success and can guide future endeavors.

  1. Establish Team Ownership & Accountability
Success hinges on a team that feels empowered and accountable. By clearly defining roles and fostering a sense of ownership, teams can align efforts, overcome challenges, and deliver results with unity and purpose.
  2. Build Relationships with the Right Stakeholders
Early and consistent engagement with key stakeholders—decision-makers, end-users, and influencers—creates trust and alignment. Strong relationships ensure smoother collaboration and help navigate competing priorities.
  3. Embrace Simulation and Development Environments
Testing in a controlled digital environment is critical. Simulating processes allows teams to identify issues, refine solutions, and avoid costly real-world mistakes.
  4. Prioritize a Future-Proof Network
A robust, scalable network is the foundation of any technology transformation. Investing in infrastructure that anticipates future needs prevents bottlenecks and supports long-term growth.
  5. Think Like a Psychologist
Technology projects are as much about people as they are about systems. Understanding stakeholder concerns, managing resistance, and communicating benefits with empathy are essential for driving adoption and success.
  6. Stand in the Ring and Fight It Out
Challenges are inevitable, but perseverance is key. Facing issues head-on, resolving conflicts through open dialogue, and staying committed to the goal ensures progress, even in the face of adversity.

We extend our gratitude to all team members, past and present, whose dedication and resilience made this project a success.
